COME PREPARED! What To Bring To A Networking Event

As "Lake locals," we foster strong connections with each other by coming together to host and volunteer for community events, attend business socials, and supporting one another however we can. Lake Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to play our part by hosting monthly networking socials, thus creating an additional opportunity for local professionals to forge new connections and strengthen existing ones.

Our next networking social will take place tonight at Topsider in Osage Beach. We're here to help you prepare for a successful evening of networking and fun by offering these quick reminders.

WHAT TO BRING TO A NETWORKING EVENT

In order to prepare for a successful networking event, you need to bring several things with you. Some of these things are tangible items that you will use during your conversations. Others are intangible concepts that are nevertheless crucial components of preparing for a successful evening of networking.

Here is a checklist of intangible things to bring to a networking event:
  • A clear understanding of what you and your company have to offer
    • You'll only have a few minutes to create a lasting impression. Practice your elevator speech ahead of time so that you know what to say.
  • A smile
    • People are naturally drawn to people who are approachable and engaging. Donning a smile for the entire event will give you a significant advantage.
  • Authenticity
    • In order to last, the connections you make at networking events must be built on authenticity and trust. Prepare to be completely honest about what you and your company have to offer.
  • Engaging questions
    • Don't waste precious time gabbing about the weather. Come with a mental list of engaging, open-ended questions to encourage new contacts to open up about their businesses.
  • Listening skills
    • Effective communication requires a willingness to actively listen to what the other person is saying. Be prepared to listen more than you talk.
  • A firm handshake
    • Good or bad, your handshake will leave an impression. Be prepared to offer a firm handshake to form a positive impression.

Here is a checklist of tangible items to bring to a networking event:
  • A pen
    • You never know when you may need to jot down a couple notes. Bring a pen so that you can write down a few general notes and impressions on the back of someone's business card after meeting with her.
  • Business cards
    • This the most obvious - and perhaps most important - thing you can bring to a networking event. Bring lots of business cards and be prepared to pass them out to each new contact you meet.
  • Breath mints
    • That garlic cheese dip might be amazing, but your breath afterwards probably won't be! Bring a couple breath mints so that you avoid turning off potential contacts. Avoid gum - consistently chewing while you talk won't do you any favors.
  • Your cell phone
    • Exchanging business cards and jotting down notes on the backs of business cards is helpful, but sometimes exchanging contacts virtually may be even easier. Bring your phone, but avoid pulling it out unless you are going to specifically use it for networking purposes.
  • Name tag
    • Wearing a clear, easily legible name tag is a crucial component of making yourself accessible and approachable.

By packing these items ahead of time, you'll be able to set yourself up for an evening of networking success.

See You Tonight!

Join us tonight for our April networking social. Details are as follows:
  • Date:  Tuesday, April 18, 2017
  • Time:  5:00 - 7:00 PM
  • Place:  Topsider Night Club
    • 4877 Osage Beach Parkway
    • Osage Beach, MO 65065

Tonight's event will focus on volunteer appreciation as well as networking opportunities. Free appetizers and a cash bar will be available.

We look forward to seeing you there!

5 Tips To Grow Your Business At The Lake Of The Ozarks

As the owner, you are the heart and soul of your company. While your team members each play a crucial role, the success of your business ultimately depends on you.

This responsibility isn't something to fear; rather, it is something to celebrate! Under your effective supervision and leadership, your business can thrive. As a business owner at the Lake of the Ozarks, you have a myriad of resources available to help your company succeed. Lake Area Chamber of Commerce is here to do our part by offering a few simple tips to help you grow your business.

1. Dedicate Every Morning To Generating New Business.
Juggling paperwork, going to meetings, overseeing payroll, monitoring cash flow... there's a lot that goes into keeping a business running. Once their businesses are off the ground, many entrepreneurs find that they become so focused on keeping up with their current workloads that they forget to dedicate any extra time to growing their businesses. Make a point to spend your first 1-3 hours every morning focusing exclusively on generating new business. The results will likely speak for themselves.

2. Hire Good People.
As the company owner, keeping up with everything that goes into running a successful company is ultimately your responsibility. If you don't have time (or choose not) to do certain tasks yourself, it is up to you to appoint someone reliable to fulfill them for you. This probably goes without saying, but it essential that you hire trustworthy, reliable, high-caliber employees. Ideally, your team members should treat your company with the same respect and attention to detail that they would give to their own business. Self-motivating team members will become an invaluable asset as you continue to grow your business.

3. Be Consistent...
Consistency is a key component of any successful business venture. Your customers and clients expect you to continually deliver the same level of high-quality service they received on the first day they came to you. If you are unable to be consistent, they may look to your competitors to provide the services they need.

4. ... But Adaptable.
Consistency is crucial, but adaptability is a must. Nothing ever remains the same for too long. Just when you have found a comfortable rhythm and everything seems to be flowing smoothly, something will inevitably disrupt the process. Whether this disruption stems from an internal source (one of your employees announces that she is pregnant) or an external one (you learn that your top contractor is moving out of state). Regardless of the source of the disruption, the success of your business will depend on how quickly you are able to adapt to your new circumstances.

5. Get Involved
People want to do business with people they know, like, and trust. One of the best ways to generate new and repeat business is to establish a people-centered presence in your community. Sponsor community and non-profit events, volunteer your time, and encourage your team members to get involved as well. Engaging in this manner will demonstrate to your customers that you are accessible and committed to the health of your community.

Lake Area Chamber Of Commerce Is Here To Help!
As your trusted Chamber of Commerce at the Lake of the Ozarks, Lake Area Chamber is here to help you and your business succeed. Joining Lake Area Chamber can be a great way way to get involved, as a membership opens up multiple volunteer, sponsorship, and networking opportunities. 13 Fun Facts About The Lake Of The Ozarks

The Lake of the Ozarks is famous for being a popular tourist destination in the Midwest. It has been well known for many years, but since it was recently named the Best Recreational Lake in the Country, the Lake of the Ozarks has been gaining increasing fame and popularity.

Even if you have lived here your whole life, you might be surprised to learn some of these interesting facts!

The Summer Season Is Coming ... Are You Ready?

Just like that, another winter has come and gone. The bright spring flowers and the steadily rising temperatures make it impossible to ignore the fact that the summer season is right around the corner. As the owner of your own Lake of the Ozarks business, now is the time to ensure your company is ready for all that the busy summer season will bring. Lake Area Chamber of Commerce is here to help!

Advertising Your Business

Advertising your business is the only legitimate, measurable way to get your company name in front of potential and existing customers to generate new and repeat business. Radio, television, and magazine ads are powerful examples of traditional forms of advertising, but they aren't the only ones available to businesses today.

Joining Lake Area Chamber of Commerce is a great way to round out your advertising strategy. We proudly promote our members' businesses by displaying their brochures in Willmore Lodge, posting about their involvement on our Facebook page of over 2,500 fans, and hosting monthly networking socials for our members to support one another's businesses. By getting people talking about your business, we also promote powerful word-of-mouth referrals for your business.

Securing Your Staff

Your staff members are your company's lifeblood. You could have all the customers in the world, but if you don't have a talented staff dedicated to meeting your customers' needs, they will quickly take their business elsewhere.

Even if your company is open year-round, you can most likely expect to see an increase in business during the summer months as the Lake Area is inundated with tourists and second-home owners. Since the temperatures are rising early this year, we've already seen an increase in traffic as people begin making their ways to the Lake of the Ozarks.

If you haven't already, now is the time to organize your summer staff so that you will be prepared to meet the needs of your customers when the busy season hits. Our Lake of the Ozarks community job fair is a great place to start. Click here for more information about our upcoming job fair.

Enhancing Your Image

Advertising your business is only part of the equation. Promoting your company's name and getting in front of new and potential customers is important, but these efforts cannot stand on their own. In order to be truly successful, your advertising must be built on a firm foundation of a positive company reputation.

Joining the Lake Area Chamber of Commerce is a powerful way to enhance your company's image (and generate those positive word-of-mouth referrals that we talked about earlier). Our members care about the community and take every opportunity they can to get involved. Their efforts speak volumes to us as well as to their customers.

Visit Our Website For More Info!

If you would like more information about Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and how we can help you prepare your business for the busy summer season, call us at 573-964-1008 or visit our website at www.LakeAreaChamber.com. We would be thrilled to assist you however we can!

5 Networking Statistics You Can't Ignore

As the modern world becomes increasingly digitally focused, traditional forms of communication are becoming lost arts. Many business professionals - especially the Millennial generation - tend to favor texting, email, and social media over phone calls and, in some cases, in-person visits. Despite the many conveniences it offers, however, modern technology will never be able to compete with the power of face-to-face communication.

Since our March Lake of the Ozarks business networking social is next week, we thought it would be appropriate to take this opportunity to share with you some eye-opening statistics about the power of in-person networking. The numbers speak for themselves!

5 Face-To-Face Networking Stats
Source: Hubspot
  • 95% say that face-to-face meetings are essential for long-term business relationships.
  • 85% of professionals say they build stronger, more meaningful business relationships during in-person meetings and conferences.
  • 77% of professionals say they prefer in-person meetings because of the opportunity to read body language and facial expressions.
  • 75% say they prefer in-person meetings because they lead to more social interactions and the ability to bond with coworkers/clients.
  • 49% say they prefer in-person meetings because they allow for more complex strategic thinking.

The Power Of In-Person Networking

Digital communication is valuable, but it will never measure up to the strength of in-person relationship building. Taking the time to meet face-to-face builds credibility in a way that no other form of communication does. It also allows you to make a lasting impression by giving you the opportunity to showcase your personality through real, in-person interactions with clients and prospects.

Don't Miss Out On This Valuable Networking Opportunity!

At Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, we make it our mission to enhance the economic prosperity of our members. We host monthly business networking socials to provide both current and members with the opportunity to grow their businesses by fostering strong relationships and generating new leads.

March Networking Social
  • Date:  Tuesday, March 21, 2017
  • Time:  5:00 - 7:00 PM
  • Place:  Vista Grande Mexican Restaurant

A cash bar will be available and free appetizers will be provided to all who attend. This particular social is being co-hosted by Chamber member 101.9 The Wave.

See You Next Week!

5 Tips To Enhance Your Networking Skills

Most people don't want to do business with inaccessible companies. They want to do business with real people - people who are relatable, accessible, and responsive to their needs as a customer. Building and maintaining this reputation isn't simply something you can work on in your spare time. As a business owner, it is up to you to demonstrate your accessibility to your customers on a full-time basis.

By providing networking, sponsorship, and volunteer opportunities, Lake Area Chamber of Commerce is here to help our members build and maintain a positive reputation for their businesses. This week, we're providing a few networking tips to help members (like you!) get the most out of our monthly networking socials.

5 Tips To Help You Network Like A Pro

1. Approach People You Don't Know.
While this may seem like the most obvious component of networking, it is also the strategy that gets avoided most often. Striking up a conversation with a stranger can be an intimidating prospect, so most people unconsciously gravitate towards the people they already know. By never talking new people, however, you limit your company's potential growth. The next time you are at a networking event, step outside your comfort zone and approach someone new.

2. Be Genuine.
The point of networking is to build strong relationships with other business professionals. Relationships built on falsehoods rarely last, and can quickly become compromised once the other person figures out that he has been lied to. If you remember nothing else, remember to always be genuine and authentic when you network.

3. Focus On The Other Person.
We all love to talk about ourselves. When you meet someone for the first time, resist the urge to sell them on yourself or your company. Instead, ask her engaging, open-ended questions about her profession. She'll appreciate the opportunity to talk about her business, and she'll remember you as the one who showed genuine interest in her life.

4. Help People.
Networking provides a powerful opportunity to show your personal side to both existing and potential customers. One of the best ways to build a strong reputation is to help people. Whether that means offering to put them in touch with the right people, throw in an extra perk when they work with you, or simply share your expertise, helping people is a great way to foster positive relationships.

5. Follow Up Quickly.
The initial conversation you have at a networking event is only the first step. If you connected with someone or think you may have identified a potential client, it is important that you follow up with them the next day. It doesn't need to be more than a quick email, but it is important to keep communication flowing.
