Quick Networking Tips for Your Next Event

Networking is a major part of owning or working for a business. It's a great way to represent your brand and can help you build a TON of connections. Whether you're starting a new business venture of have been in business for years, it's always important to get out and meet new people in your community. While most of us know the importance of networking, the Lake Area Chamber of Commerce knows it can be a bit intimidating too. Take a look below for some easy tips to prepare for your next networking event!

Make Plans to Arrive on Time

While it can be VERY tempting to arrive casually late, it's important to get ahead of your nerves and jump right in. It may actually seem more intimidating to enter an already crowded room than enter a room as the event begins. It's also a great way to meet and greet fellow attendees as they enter the room. You never know what business you may stir up from another peer, as they enter the room.

Ask the Right Questions

If a group has already formed, don't be afraid to ask if you may join in the conversation. Ask open ended questions of those around you and don't forget to listen intently to their answers. You can learn a great deal about a person and their business by listening to what they talk about! You may also find a mutual connection or passion by getting to know another business owner on a personal level.

Wear Your Smile Proudly

It's a simple thing to do, but it's an important one - smile! A smiling face seems much more approachable than someone who does not look happy to be there. Smiling is a non-verbal que that you are ready to visit with others and that you look forward to meeting them.

Bring Business Cards and a Name Tag

Name tags should be worn, while attending any networking event. This helps others remember your name, if they have already met you AND helps unfamiliar faces feel more confident about meeting you, since they will already know your name and business. It's an easy way to find a connection without saying a word. Also be sure to bring plenty of business cards - you can easily exchange cards with your contact information with fellow networkers. It's a great way to help someone remember you after a networking event too!
